Maithon is defined by water. The town grew up around the Maithon Dam on the Barakar River, built by the Damodar Valley Corporation for flood control, irrigation and power generation. On a map the reservoir is the dominant shape: a broad, irregular expanse of water with inlets, headlands and wooded islands, held back by the long straight line of the dam.
The dam sits near the border between Jharkhand and West Bengal, and the settlement is spread along the roads near its embankment. Staff housing, offices and the power installations form a planned, spacious layout quite unlike the dense lanes of older market towns. The lake and its shoreline draw day visitors from Dhanbad, Asansol and the surrounding coal belt.
