Malegaon grew along the Mosam River in Nashik district, and on a map the river is the thread that ties the city together. On both banks the lanes are narrow and closely packed, a fine web of short streets that shows up as solid texture in black and white. Wider roads cut through this texture and lead out onto the flat, farmed land of the surrounding plateau.
The city is one of India's major powerloom centres, and much of its fabric of homes and small workshops grew around weaving. It has also become known for its self-made film culture. Local amateur productions, shot on tiny budgets with neighbourhood casts, became the subject of documentaries and a feature film, and made the town's name familiar far beyond Maharashtra.
