Malmesbury is the main town of the Swartland in the Western Cape, about an hour's drive north of Cape Town. It lies in a shallow valley surrounded by gently rolling hills, and on a map the town appears as a compact grid of streets set among wide open farmland, with roads curving to follow the contours of the land around it.
The older centre, laid out around its church and main streets, is regular and tightly organised, while later neighbourhoods spread outward over the slopes. The N7 highway passes the town on its way north toward Namaqualand, and the railway runs through the area, both drawing strong lines across the rural pattern of field boundaries and farm roads.
Founded in the early nineteenth century and named after the Earl of Malmesbury, the town grew as the service centre for one of South Africa's main wheat-growing regions.
