Manchester lies just east of Hartford, and for much of its history it was defined by the Cheney Brothers silk mills. The company built mills, worker housing and parks across the town, earning it the nickname Silk City. The Cheney Brothers Historic District still marks that industrial centre on the map.
The town's older streets follow the valleys and small rivers that once powered the mills, including the Hockanum River to the north. Main Street runs north to south through the historic centre. Around it, later neighbourhoods and commercial areas stretch toward the interchanges of I-84 and I-384.
