Mandāwa lies in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, on the dry, sandy plains at the edge of the Thar Desert. From above, the old town is a dense, irregular web of narrow lanes, with larger rectangular compounds set among them. Those compounds are the havelis, the courtyard mansions for which Shekhawati is best known.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Marwari merchant families built these havelis and covered their walls with painted murals of gods, legends, trains and everyday scenes. Many of them survive, and they have made the town a destination for travellers interested in painted architecture. A fort, now converted into a hotel, stands near the heart of town.
