Manono lies in Tanganyika province, in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. From above, the town appears as a spread of streets across open, gently rolling land, with large disturbed areas nearby that mark decades of mining activity.
The layout combines an older planned core, dating from the colonial period, with more informal neighbourhoods growing around it. Roads lead out across the savanna toward other towns in the region, and water bodies and former mining pits leave distinctive shapes in the landscape surrounding the urban area.
Manono developed as a tin mining centre in the early twentieth century and became one of the most important tin producers in the region.
