Marcinelle is a district of Charleroi on the south side of the Sambre. On the map its northern edge presses against the river and the city centre. From there, long streets of terraced houses climb southward, and the grid gradually loosens into larger plots, parkland and woodland on the higher ground.
Its history is industrial. The Bois du Cazier colliery, site of the 1956 mining disaster in which 262 miners died, is now a memorial and part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of Walloon mining sites. Marcinelle is also home to the comics publisher Dupuis, which gave its name to the 'Marcinelle school' of Belgian comics.
A Marcinelle map poster shows the imprint of that past: dense workers' streets, the rail and road lines that served industry, and the green spaces that have replaced some of the old sites. The result is a finely detailed, layered drawing.

Long, narrow rows of houses run up the slope in tight parallel lines. They give much of the district a fine, dense texture.

The former colliery site, now a memorial and museum, sits among the streets to the south. It is a quiet, significant place within the plan.
