Mardin in southeastern Turkey is built on the southern face of a steep hill, with the citadel at the top and the old town arranged in terraces below. From above, the historic streets run in long, narrow bands along the slope, joined by stairways and passages that climb straight up between the houses.
The honey-coloured limestone houses, mosques, madrasas and churches reflect a long history shared by Arabic, Kurdish, Syriac and Turkish communities. A few kilometres away, the Syriac Orthodox monastery of Deyrulzafaran has stood for many centuries. Below the town, the plain stretches south toward the Syrian border.
