Mariveles sits at the southern tip of the Bataan Peninsula, facing the entrance to Manila Bay, with Corregidor lying offshore. From above, the town curves around a sheltered bay. Behind it, the land rises steeply towards Mount Mariveles, the dormant volcano that forms the southern bulk of the peninsula.
The town has a significant place in Philippine history. In 1942 the Bataan Death March began in Mariveles, and markers along the route still record the distance walked by the prisoners. Today much of the waterfront is taken up by the Freeport Area of Bataan, an industrial and export zone.
