Mataró is the capital of the Maresme, the stretch of Catalan coast northeast of Barcelona. The city runs along the Mediterranean shore, and from above its shape is set by a series of parallel bands: the beach and port at the front, the railway and coastal road just behind, and the city rising up the slope towards the wooded hills of the coastal range.
The railway has a special place in the city's story. The line between Barcelona and Mataró opened in 1848 as the first railway on the Iberian Peninsula, and its tracks still run right along the seafront. Mataró is also where Antoni Gaudí completed one of his first works, a building for a workers' cooperative with distinctive wooden parabolic arches.
The old town sits a little back from the sea, with narrow lanes around the Basilica of Santa Maria, while later districts climb the slope in more regular blocks.
