Mathura sits on the west bank of the Yamuna, which curves along the city's eastern edge. On the map, the riverfront is lined by ghats, stepped landings leading down to the water, and the old city spreads inland behind them as a dense, irregular network of narrow lanes. Newer districts and the cantonment lie further out, with wider roads and a more regular grid.
Mathura is revered in Hindu tradition as the birthplace of Krishna, and the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple complex is one of the city's central landmarks. Vishram Ghat, on the Yamuna, is one of the most visited riverside sites. The town of Vrindavan, closely associated with Krishna's childhood, lies a short distance to the north along the same river.
