Matongo is in Tanzania's Mara Region, in the north of the country between the eastern shore of Lake Victoria and the plains leading to the Serengeti. From above, the settlement is loose and spread out. Roads and tracks run across uneven ground, and houses group along them instead of filling tidy blocks, so the pattern changes from one part of the map to another.
The region takes its name from the Mara River, which rises in Kenya and flows across northern Tanzania into Lake Victoria. The land around Matongo is a mix of farms, grazing ground and low hills. Mining has also been part of economic life in this corner of Mara, and it has shaped where roads and new settlements appear.
