Maynooth is a university town in County Kildare, west of Dublin. Its layout is unusually clear from above. Main Street runs in a straight line, with the gates of the college and the ruins of Maynooth Castle at its western end, and to the east the axis continues as the long tree-lined avenue toward Carton House. The Royal Canal passes along the southern side of the town.
The town was shaped in the eighteenth century by the FitzGerald family, Earls of Kildare and later Dukes of Leinster, whose estate at Carton adjoins it. St Patrick's College, founded in 1795 as a seminary, grew into what is now Maynooth University alongside it. On a map, the college's quadrangles and grounds take up a large, orderly block of the town.
