Medford lies a few miles north of Boston, in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The Mystic River winds through the city from west to east and divides it into two parts, with parkland and paths along its banks. To the north, the wooded hills and reservoirs of the Middlesex Fells Reservation form a large open area in sharp contrast with the dense residential streets to the south.
Medford is one of the oldest settlements in New England, and it has a surprising place in American culture. Lydia Maria Child's poem about going over the river and through the wood to grandfather's house describes a journey here, and James Lord Pierpont is said to have written Jingle Bells in the town. Tufts University's hilltop campus straddles the border with Somerville.
