Mek’ī sits on the floor of the Ethiopian Rift Valley in Oromiya, south of Addis Ababa. From above it takes the shape of a crossroads settlement: a main road runs through the centre, and shorter streets branch off it into blocks of homes, yards and market space. The streets are mostly straight, and the town thins out quickly into the open valley.
The Meki River runs close to the town on its way into Lake Ziway, one of the Rift Valley lakes. On a map, the water pulls the eye east and south, away from the grid and towards the flat irrigated land along the lakeshore. The area is known for farming, and the fields around the town show up as a looser pattern of tracks and plots than the streets at its centre.

Meki River
The river that shares the town's name winds across the valley floor towards Lake Ziway. On paper it is a soft, irregular line that breaks up the straighter geometry of the streets.
