Mentougou is a district on Beijing's western edge, and most of its area is mountainous. Only a small eastern portion belongs to the urban plain, where streets connect directly to the rest of the capital. Beyond it the Western Hills rise quickly, and on a map the dense grid breaks up into winding valley roads and small settlements.
The Yongding River flows out of the mountains through Mentougou, carving a deep valley before emerging onto the plain. Villages, reservoirs and old mining settlements follow the river and its side valleys. Further west, the district includes Dongling Mountain in the Lingshan area, Beijing's highest peak, and remote traditional villages such as Cuandixia.
The district was long known for coal mining, and for Tanzhe Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the Beijing area. A Mentougou map poster shows the moment where one of the world's largest cities meets the mountains, with a tight grid on one side and a network of valleys on the other.
