Mercedes is the capital of the Soriano Department in western Uruguay. It sits on the south bank of the Río Negro, some distance before the river joins the Uruguay. The town follows the Spanish colonial model: a grid of square blocks laid out around a central plaza, with streets running straight toward the water.
The riverfront is the town's defining edge. A rambla, or waterfront promenade, runs along the Río Negro, and wooded islands sit in the channel opposite. On a map the river forms a broad flowing band across the top of the composition, and the grid stops at it in a clean line. Beyond the last blocks the land opens into the flat, farmed countryside of Soriano.
