Meridian grew up in the mid-nineteenth century where railroad lines crossed in eastern Mississippi, and the map still shows that origin. Downtown is a tight grid aligned with the tracks, and rail yards run through the middle of the city. Older residential neighbourhoods spread across gently rolling ground around it, and Interstates 20 and 59 trace a long arc along the southern side.
In 1864 Union forces under General Sherman destroyed much of the town's railroad infrastructure. Meridian recovered, and around the start of the twentieth century it was the largest city in Mississippi. It is also the birthplace of Jimmie Rodgers, often called the father of country music, and Highland Park is home to a restored Dentzel carousel that is a National Historic Landmark.
A Meridian map poster shows how the railroad organised the city. The line of the tracks, the rectangular downtown blocks, the curving streets of later suburbs and the large green shapes of parks and golf courses all sit together in one frame. Toward the edges, the roads thin out into the pine forest and farmland of east Mississippi.

Downtown grid
The historic core is a compact, orderly grid of short blocks. It stands out as a clear rectangle among the more loosely laid-out neighbourhoods around it.
Interstate arc
Interstates 20 and 59 share a route along the south side of the city. Their smooth, sweeping line contrasts with the right angles of the older streets.
