Mezőtúr lies in the Nagykunság area of the Great Hungarian Plain, in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county. The land around it is almost completely level, and from above that flatness shows in the town's wide, spread-out plan: long straight streets, large residential blocks and a central area where the main roads meet.
The town is known for its pottery tradition, which has been practised here for centuries. The Hortobágy-Berettyó channel runs along the edge of town, and the Hármas-Körös flows not far to the south, so water shapes the surrounding landscape of fields, drainage ditches and river meadows.
