Milford is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, about thirty miles southwest of Boston. The Charles River flows through it not far from its source, and on the map the young river appears as a slim, winding line with ponds nearby. The town centre gathers around Main Street and a town park, with residential streets spreading out in irregular New England fashion.
Milford gave its name to Milford pink granite, a stone quarried here and used in buildings well beyond the town. Nineteenth-century industry, including shoe-making and quarrying, drew waves of immigrants and shaped the neighbourhoods that still surround the centre. Today Interstate 495 runs along the eastern side of town, a strong modern line against the older street pattern.
