Mineralnye Vody lies in the valley of the Kuma River in Stavropol Krai, at the northern threshold of the Caucasian Mineral Waters region. Its map is shaped by transport: a large railway station and yards run through the town, main roads lead south towards the spa towns, and the airport occupies a wide expanse of open land beside the city.
Despite its name, the town is not itself a spa resort but the hub through which visitors reach Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Yessentuki and Zheleznovodsk. It grew around a railway station opened in the 1870s, and its airport is the main air gateway to the region. Nearby rises Zmeyka, one of the isolated laccolith hills that give the area its distinctive landscape.

Zmeyka hill
The nearby laccolith rises from the plain as a compact isolated mountain, its rounded outline appearing clearly as an open space among the surrounding roads and fields.
