Miri sits on the coast of northern Sarawak, close to the border with Brunei, where the Miri River reaches the South China Sea. The map shows a long, straight shoreline, with the older town gathered near the river mouth and newer districts spreading along the coast and inland. Roads run close to the sea, giving the city a stretched and linear shape.
Rising behind the centre is Canada Hill, a low ridge that interrupts the street pattern and offers views over the town and the sea. On its slope stands the Grand Old Lady, Malaysia's first oil well, drilled in 1910, which marked the beginning of the petroleum industry that transformed Miri from a small settlement into a city.
Miri is also a gateway to some of Borneo's best-known natural sites, including the Niah Caves and Gunung Mulu National Park, both reached from here. Offshore, coral reefs lie beneath the water.
