Mishawaka grew up on the St. Joseph River in northern Indiana, and the river still organises the map. It enters from the east and loops through the centre of town, so older streets on both banks meet it at angles while bridges knit the two sides together. Around this core, a regular Midwestern grid extends outward in every direction until it runs into neighbouring South Bend.
Toward the north the grid gives way to a newer landscape of wide commercial roads, parking lots and curving subdivision streets, with the Grape Road shopping corridor running through it.
