Mitú is the capital of Vaupés department, deep in the Colombian Amazon near the border with Brazil. The town stands on the bank of the Vaupés river and is reached mainly by air or by water, since no road links it to the rest of the country. On a map, that isolation is plain to see: a small cluster of streets surrounded on every side by forest and water.
The plan is simple. A few streets run parallel to the river, others lead inland, and the airstrip forms the longest straight line in the area, a clearing cut through the trees. The river bends past the town in wide curves, with rapids and islands along its course, while forest paths lead to nearby indigenous communities.
Vaupés is home to many indigenous peoples, including the Cubeo, and much of the department is recognised as indigenous reserve land.
