Monção stands on the south bank of the Minho River in the far north of Portugal, where the river forms the border with Galicia. From above, the historic centre is easy to spot: a tight, rounded core of old streets, parts of it still inside its fortifications. Newer streets spread out behind it, away from the water.
The town is at the heart of Alvarinho wine country, and vineyards fill the valley slopes around it. Local tradition remembers Deu-la-Deu Martins, a woman said to have ended a siege in the fourteenth century by throwing bread over the walls to convince the attackers the town still had plenty to eat. A road bridge connects Monção with the Spanish bank.
A Monção map poster is shaped by that river edge. The wide band of the Minho runs across the sheet, the old town clusters against it, and the bridge adds a single straight line to the other country. In black and white, the fortification outline is subtle but clear, like a thumbprint at the water's edge.
