Montebello Hills
The largely undeveloped hills north of the city, long used as an oil field, leave a clear open space on the map within the dense streets.

Montebello Map Poster & Print
Montebello lies in the western San Gabriel Valley, east of downtown Los Angeles. Most of the city is a regular grid of residential streets, but the Montebello Hills in the north break up the pattern with open, undeveloped ground. The Rio Hondo runs along its eastern edge, and the Pomona Freeway crosses the city from west to east.
The hills were for decades an oil field, and that history is part of why they stayed largely empty. Montebello is also home to a long-established Armenian community, and its Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument in Bicknell Park was among the first memorials of its kind in the United States.
A Montebello map poster shows a typical Southern California layout with a few strong features: the channel of the river, the freeway, and the hills to the north. The grid of the rest of the city fills the space evenly around them, giving a balanced composition.

Rio Hondo channel
The river channel runs along the eastern side of the city, forming a long, straight boundary that separates Montebello from its neighbours.
Pomona Freeway
State Route 60 cuts across the city in a smooth, heavy line, with interchanges and ramps standing out against the grid.
