Monza lies just north-east of Milan, and its map has two clear parts. To the south is the compact historic centre, built around the course of the Lambro river. Streets there converge on the cathedral and the old squares. To the north is the Parco di Monza, an enormous walled park. It sits against the city like a second, green city.
Inside the park, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza traces its long curves and straights among the trees. It has hosted the Italian Grand Prix for decades. At the edge of the park stands the neoclassical Villa Reale. In the centre, the Duomo holds the Iron Crown of Lombardy, a relic used for centuries in royal coronations.
