Mopti stands where the Bani River joins the Niger, at the southern edge of Mali's vast Inner Niger Delta. The town grew on several islands in the floodplain. Dikes and causeways link them to each other and to the mainland, which is why Mopti is sometimes called the Venice of Mali.
From above, water shapes nearly everything. The rivers and seasonal channels surround the town, and the built-up areas are pressed onto the higher ground between them. The port along the waterfront is lined with pinasses, the long wooden boats that carry goods and passengers up and down the Niger.
The Great Mosque of Mopti, built in the Sudano-Sahelian mud-brick style, stands in the old town. Mopti has long been a gateway to Djenné, Dogon Country and Timbuktu. A Mopti map poster shows a town that exists because of its rivers, and the map makes that visible.
