Mortsel borders Antwerp to the southeast and forms part of the city's continuous built-up area. From above, the boundary is almost invisible, and streets flow from one municipality into the other. Mortsel itself is compact and heavily residential, with row houses and small gardens packed into a tight, irregular grid.
One of the town's most recognisable features is Fort 4, part of the nineteenth-century ring of fortifications around Antwerp. Its moat and outline are still clear on the map. Mortsel is also home to the Agfa-Gevaert headquarters and factory. In April 1943, an Allied raid aimed at a nearby aircraft works struck residential areas and killed many civilians, an event still remembered locally.
