Moss lies on the eastern shore of the Oslofjord, and its map is shaped by one narrow strip of water. Kanalen, a channel cut through a thin neck of land, separates the town centre from Jeløy, which is therefore technically an island. The centre sits on the mainland side, and Jeløy's farmland, woods and shoreline fill the western part of the frame.
The Convention of Moss was signed here in 1814, establishing the union of Norway and Sweden. Today the town is also known for the Moss–Horten ferry, one of the busiest car ferry routes in Norway, which crosses the fjord from the harbour to Horten on the western shore.
