Mostar sits in a narrow valley in Herzegovina, and from above the Neretva River divides it into eastern and western halves. The old town clusters closely on both banks, with twisting lanes that lead down to the water. Beyond it, the city spreads along the valley floor, and steep, dry mountains rise on either side and hold it in.
The city is named after the bridge keepers who watched over the Stari Most, the Old Bridge, a single stone arch completed in the sixteenth century under Ottoman rule. The bridge was destroyed in 1993 during the war and rebuilt with traditional methods, reopening in 2004. The bridge and the old town around it are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
