Mporokoso is the administrative centre of a district in Zambia's Northern Province, in plateau country to the west of Kasama. On the map the town has a modest footprint: a cluster of streets around offices, a market, schools and a hospital, with a few roads striking out across the surrounding land. Beyond the edge of town the pattern loosens almost at once into tracks and scattered homesteads.
The land around it is typical of the northern plateau. Wide stretches of woodland are broken by dambos, the shallow seasonal wetlands that stay green long after the rains, and by small streams draining toward larger rivers.
