Muaná is a municipality on the southern side of Marajó, the vast island group at the mouth of the Amazon in the state of Pará. The town sits on the waterfront, and from above its short grid of streets looks like a small clearing held between river and forest. Most connections here run by boat, so the rivers, channels and creeks are as much a part of the map as the roads.
Life in Muaná follows the tides of the estuary. The waterways around it rise and fall daily, and much of the surrounding land is floodable forest threaded with narrow streams. The region is closely tied to açaí harvesting and river fishing. The urban area is small and fairly regular, with streets running back from the riverfront toward the forest edge.
