Murmansk is the largest city north of the Arctic Circle, stretched for many kilometres along the eastern shore of Kola Bay, a long fjord-like inlet of the Barents Sea. From above it is a narrow city: streets climb in terraces up the hillsides from the port, and the whole urban area runs north to south, parallel to the water.
Thanks to the warm North Atlantic Current, the bay stays ice-free all year, which is why the city was founded here in 1916 as a port and has remained central to Arctic shipping. The nuclear-powered icebreaker Lenin, now a museum ship, is moored at the waterfront, and the Kola Bay Bridge crosses the inlet south of the city.
On a hill above the port stands the monument known as Alyosha, dedicated to the defenders of the Soviet Arctic in the Second World War.
