Nā’īn lies on the high, dry plateau of central Iran, northeast of Isfahan, on routes that have crossed the desert for centuries. Its old quarter shows up on a map as a tight, irregular web of narrow lanes and courtyard houses, a pattern suited to shade and shelter from heat and wind, surrounded by newer, straighter streets.
Two landmarks anchor the old town. The Jameh Mosque of Nā’īn is one of the oldest congregational mosques in Iran, known for its early stucco decoration. Nearby rises the Narin Qal'eh, a fortress of mud brick whose origins reach back before the Islamic period.
