Nakhon Pathom lies west of Bangkok on the flat central plain of Thailand. The centre of the city is organised around a single landmark: Phra Pathom Chedi, one of the tallest stupas in the world, set in a large square compound. On a map, the compound is a clear open block, and the streets around it form the core of the town.
The city is considered one of the oldest in Thailand and is linked to the early spread of Buddhism in the region. The southern railway line passes just north of the chedi, and the Sanam Chandra Palace, built for King Vajiravudh, lies in wooded grounds to the west. Canals and the Tha Chin river run through the wider area.
