Nakivale lies in Isingiro District in southwestern Uganda. It is one of the oldest refugee settlements in Africa, with origins in the late 1950s. On a map it does not look like a camp of tents. It spreads over a large area of rolling hills and valleys, with scattered villages, reception areas and trading centres linked by a web of dirt roads.
Uganda's refugee policy gives residents plots of land to farm, and that shows from above. Settlement clusters are separated by cultivated ground and grazing land. Lake Nakivale and its surrounding wetlands mark the landscape. People from many countries in the region live here, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia and South Sudan.
