Nanjin lies in the Hechuan area of northern Chongqing, where the Jialing River meets the Fu and Qu rivers. From above, water is the defining feature. Wide, looping rivers divide the land into lobes and peninsulas, and the urban streets fill the flatter ground between them, with steeper, greener slopes rising beyond.
The confluence has long been strategically important. Nearby, on a hill above the rivers, stands the Diaoyu Fortress, where Song dynasty defenders held out against Mongol forces for decades in the thirteenth century. The Mongol ruler Möngke Khan died during the siege in 1259, which makes the site well known in Chinese and world history.
A Nanjin map poster is built from the curves of the rivers. Their bends frame the city on several sides, bridges connect the separate parts of the district, and newer high-rise neighbourhoods follow the shape of the land. The composition is fluid and organic, quite different from the rigid grids of cities built on flat plains.
