Nanjō covers the south-eastern corner of Okinawa Island. It was formed in 2006 by merging several towns and villages, so it does not have a single dense centre. On a map it looks more like a network of settlements linked by winding roads, spread over green hills that fall steeply to the coast.
The best-known place in the city is Sefa-utaki, the sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing and sits among forest and limestone rocks above the sea. Offshore lies Kudaka Island, also part of Nanjō, which in local tradition is considered the island of the gods.
Inland, the landscape includes limestone valleys such as Gangala, where caves and old forest remain. A Nanjō map poster shows the contrast between the rugged, curving coast and the small grids of the villages on the higher ground, with the Pacific beyond and Kudaka as a small shape in the sea.
