Nantou sits in Nanshan District of Shenzhen, close to Shenzhen Bay. Its heart is Nantou Ancient City, a small historic town that for centuries served as a regional administrative seat. From above, the old town's regular pattern of narrow streets and small blocks stands out clearly against the wide roads and large towers of the modern city around it.
The historic core keeps a cross-shaped arrangement of main lanes, with finer alleys filling the blocks between them. Just outside, urban villages and newer developments press in, and major arterial roads and metro lines cut through the district.
