Naraina is a town in Jaipur district, Rajasthan, on the flat, dry country west of the state capital. Its old core is a tight knot of narrow lanes and closely built houses, the kind of organic street pattern that grows over centuries rather than being planned. Outside that core the map opens up into fields, tracks and scattered settlements.
The town has a lasting place in religious history. Dadu Dayal, the sixteenth-century poet-saint whose followers form the Dadu Panth, spent his last years at Naraina, and the town remains an important centre for the sect. Its shrine draws pilgrims, which gives this modest place a significance well beyond its size.
