Naze is the main town of Amami Ōshima, a subtropical island south of Kyushu in Kagoshima Prefecture, and since 2006 it has been part of the city of Amami. The town fills a narrow strip of flat land at the head of a sheltered bay. Steep, forested hills rise almost immediately behind the last streets and give the settlement its tight, crowded outline.
The harbour is the centre of life here, with ferries linking the island to mainland Japan and Okinawa. Amami is known for Ōshima tsumugi, a finely woven silk dyed with local mud, and for its subtropical forests and coral coast. In Naze, the dense grid by the water feels like it has been pressed between the sea and the mountains.
