Neunkirchen is the second-largest town in Saarland, and it grew up around one of the region's major ironworks. The town lies in the valley of the Blies, and much of its street network climbs the surrounding slopes in curves and switchbacks rather than in a grid. Housing estates, older workers' quarters and patches of woodland alternate across the hills.
The ironworks closed in the 1980s, and parts of the site have since been reused, with remaining blast-furnace structures kept as an industrial monument. The town is also home to a zoo on its green outskirts. On the map, the former works area stands out as a large, open zone of broad plots in the middle of the finer residential grain.
