Niagara-on-the-Lake stands at the mouth of the Niagara River where it flows into Lake Ontario, directly across the water from the United States. On a map, the Old Town is a tidy grid of streets bordered on two sides by water: the lake shore to the north and the river to the east. Beyond it, the land opens into orchards and vineyards.
The town served as the first capital of Upper Canada in the 1790s and was burned during the War of 1812; Fort George, reconstructed today, stands at its edge. It is also known for the Shaw Festival theatre and as the centre of one of Canada's leading wine regions.
