Ningbo grew up at Sanjiangkou, the meeting point of the Yuyao and Fenghua rivers, which join to form the Yong River. From above, the three waterways make a clear Y shape at the heart of the city, and the old centre fills the land between them. The Yong then flows northeast toward the sea, lined with docks, warehouses and newer riverside districts.
In the old city, Moon Lake is a long patch of water surrounded by gardens, and nearby stands Tianyi Pavilion, founded in the sixteenth century and regarded as the oldest surviving private library in China. Around this historic core, the plain spreads out in regular modern blocks, crossed by canals and ringed by expressways.
Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is among the busiest in the world by cargo, and its terminals extend along the coast and nearby islands.
