Nizhneudinsk grew up on the banks of the Uda, a river that comes down from the Eastern Sayan mountains and bends across the forested lowland of Irkutsk Oblast. From above, the water is the town's organising element: the older streets line up along the bank, and islands and side channels break the river into several strands.
The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through the town, and its tracks, yards and station form a long, straight seam that no river curve can soften. Residential blocks of detached houses fill the ground between rail and water in a loose grid, with larger apartment buildings gathered closer to the centre.
The settlement traces its origins to a seventeenth-century Cossack outpost, and the surrounding taiga, cliffs and waterfalls of the Uda basin draw travellers heading south into the mountains.
