Nogent-sur-Marne sits just east of Paris, on the right bank of the Marne where the river curves between wooded banks and small islands. Seen from above, the town is framed by green and water. The Bois de Vincennes spreads out to the west, the Marne traces the southern edge, and the streets rise from the riverside toward the plateau behind.
In the nineteenth century the town became a favourite escape for Parisians, who came by train to eat, drink and dance at the guinguettes along the river. The railway viaduct over the Marne still dominates the valley. Nogent is also home to the Pavillon Baltard, one of the iron-and-glass market halls of Les Halles, rebuilt here after the central market was dismantled.
