Novhorod-Siverskyi lies in the north of Chernihiv Oblast, close to Ukraine's border with Russia. The town sits on high ground above the right bank of the Desna. From above, the difference is striking: streets and blocks crowd along the upper bank, while below them the river winds through a broad floodplain of meadows, oxbow lakes and side channels that the map shows as open, irregular shapes.
This was the seat of the medieval Principality of Novgorod-Seversky. Its best-known prince, Ihor Sviatoslavych, led the campaign of 1185 described in The Tale of Igor's Campaign. The Transfiguration Monastery, with its walled precinct, stands on the edge of the town above the river. The monastery and the old citadel site remain the historic heart of the town.
