Nuku Hiva is the largest of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia and one of the most dramatic in shape. The island is the eroded remnant of a volcano, and its interior rises to a high central plateau, Toovii, surrounded by deep valleys and sharp ridges. There is no fringing lagoon: the coast drops steeply into open Pacific water, broken by a series of bays.
Taiohae, the administrative centre of the Marquesas, sits around a wide, nearly circular bay on the south coast, sheltered by headlands on either side. Roads climb from the town over the plateau toward the northern valleys and the airport in the northwest. Elsewhere, bays such as Hakaui, with one of the tallest waterfalls in French Polynesia inland, are reached mainly by boat or on foot.
In 1842 Herman Melville jumped ship in Taiohae Bay and spent several weeks in the Taipivai valley, an experience he turned into his first book, Typee.
