Nunivak Island lies in the Bering Sea off the delta of the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers in western Alaska, separated from the mainland coast by Etolin Strait. It is one of the largest islands in the Bering Sea, a broad, rounded mass of land. From above it looks like a sheet of tundra punctured by hundreds of small lakes and volcanic craters.
Much of the island is part of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. It is home to the Cup'ig people, who live in Mekoryuk, the only permanent village, on the north coast. Nunivak is also known for its musk oxen, brought in from Greenland in the 1930s. The herd later helped restore the species to other parts of Alaska.
